THE PENNY DREADFUL PLAYERS

The oldest student-run theatre troupe on the University of Illinois campus

You are currently on the wiki/archive for The Penny Dreadful Players website. To visit the main website with information on our current season and upcoming shows, please click here.

Welcome!

Penny Dreadful Players is a student-run theatre organization at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Our mission statement is to provide quality theatre to the campus and community at large and, in particular, to provide an outlet for original works by student playwrights. However, we like to dabble in all forms of theatre. To take a look at some of the things we've done in the past or some of the things we are doing now, visit our Shows page. Or, if you'd like to get to know some more about the people who make decisions for the group as the PDP Board of Directors, take a gander at our Board Members page. And are you interested in getting involved with the organization? Stop by the Get Involved section to learn how to get involved with our next show!

You'll probably notice that this site is actually a Wiki, which means that any of our current board members can edit the site. We've decided to "wikify" in order to make things easier all around. The PDP Wiki will allow information to get updated sooner and out to the public faster, and will also be home to the PDP History Project, in which we will be continuously adding information about past shows and productions. Click on any of the links on the sidebar to learn more specific information about our shows, members, and organization as a whole.

Are you a PDP Board Member Alum? Request access to the PDPWiki and fill in the information the current board doesn't know about! The PDP Wiki will make it easier for our history to get online, and for it to stay in a conveniently maintainable location.

He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you"—so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"—a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. And Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence.

Despite the fact that she’s rude, arrogant, selfish and demanding, he’s enchanted, and after some hot chocolate and sparring, they tumble into bed. Don Nigro’s play starts out as a kooky “meet cute” comedy, then segues into a quietly harrowing portrait of a certain kind of destructive relationship. After the mourners depart, the tyrannical matriarch announces to her five daughters that their period of mourning will last eight years. Obsessed with family honor, Bernarda rules the household with an iron fist, but all of her daughters secretly harbor a passion for Pepe el Romano, the handsomest man in the village. The eldest daughter is engaged to him, but the arrangement is a financial one, and it is the youngest daughter, Adela, who becomes his lover. When the truth finally breaks through the atmosphere of suppressed desire, jealousy, anger and fear, the consequences are tragic. Chapel of St. John the Divine

$5 at the door

First performed under heavy censorship in Germany in 1906, Frank Wedekind's 1891 play Spring Awakening closed after one night in New York in 1917 amid public outrage and charges of obscenity. The play's content was radical indeed: teenage sex, suicide, abortion, masturbation, sadomasochism. But even more radical was the unsentimental and brutally authentic comedy with which Wedekind treated it. The story traces the dawning sexual awareness of four teenagers, Melchior, Moritz, Wendla, and Hansy, who, in their painfully funny contradictions -- they are at once too innocent and not remotely innocent at all -- remain fresh and unsettling even in our own sex-saturated culture.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail director Sara Collins (scollin5@illinois.edu) or producer Natalia Wolosowicz (nwolosowicz@gmail.com).

February 12 and 13, 2010     -     The First Performance of the New Semester!

PDP Presents:

"THE SPEED SHOW PROJECT"

8pm

Greg Hall Theater

Ticekets are $4 at the door

THE SPEED SHOW PROJECT” is a brand-new show idea that combines collaborative writing with on-stage performance. The cast worked with each other to come up with concepts, themes, characters, and plot lines for a series of 1-2 Act plays. The Head Writers put all the ideas together, and now the Actors and Directors are bringing it to life on stage! And the best part? It all came together in just three weeks! So come and see the first-ever performance of a fresh, modern show concept written, directed, produced, and performed by a single ensemble. We promise, there is something for everyone!

For more information, contact Lisel at lisel.neumann@gmail.com or Mike at mgoalsz2@gmail.com.

Hope to see everyone there!

January 19, 2010     -     2010'S FIRST AUDITIONS

PDP is looking for WRITERS, DIRECTORS, and ACTORS to be part of "THE SPEED SHOW PROJECT".

This is a brand-new show idea that is a collaborative writing, directing, and acting process. How it works is the entire cast (writers, directors, and actors) will work together to come up with a series of 10-minute short plays. Then, the Head Writers will put it all together! Afterwards, the actors and directors will bring the show to the stage. (So it's kind of like "10-Minute Play Festival" meets "Come See Our Shorts".)

Auditions are THURSDAY JANUARY 21, 2010. Please bring a short written piece to auditions (especially if you want to be considered for a Head Writer part), and we will have scripts from which you can perform a cold reading. Remember, we are looking for writers, directors, and actors, so we have something for EVERYONE! Come out and audition!
